Hangin' Out at Sea

Cruise - Day 3, August 31

Today was our first Fun Day at Sea. We weren't woken up by intercom today, but noise in the hallway was random throughout the morning. We watched a few onboard tv channels before getting up to go eat.

We decided to try the brunch in the dining room. They only offer it on Fun Day at Sea. We were seated in the lower level of the ship's aft. We chose to sit at a table for 2 with an ocean view. We ordered off a special menu offering breakfast and lunch. Our food was delicious and the view was nothing but water as far as the eyes could see.

After brunch, Robin took Dean up to Deck 11 forward, where she went to watch the ship leave Port Canaveral. The Serenity Adult-Only Retreat was very inviting, but the heat and humidity was unbearable. We found a shady spot where the breeze was blowing and watched the "Very Harry Chest Contest" on the pool deck. It was quite hysterical! After the winner was awarded the Ship on a Stick trophy, we moved on to an inside activity.
We decided we would go to a free spa seminar on arthritis and back pain. Why not? It couldn't hurt to see what was being offered. The seminar was conducted by the onboard doctor of acupuncture. We listened and allowed him to stick a needle in our arm to feel the discomfort associated with the needles. Of course, in the fleshy area above the bent elbow, there was no pain. We agreed to go back to the spa with the doctor in order to complete medical forms so he would know where we needed acupuncture. Having been intrigued with acupuncture's potential, especially for Dean's lower back pain, we decided it was worth investigating.

After completing health forms, Dr, Ankur explained he would like to work on Dean's lower back, neck, and sinus. For Robin, he wanted to work on lower back, knees, and sinus. We agreed to have one session in about an hour.

We checked out a few of the shops on the ship and the surrounding areas, including the atrium. The Carnival Valor had an Americana decor. There were stars and stripes everywhere as well as murals of important people and events in history.

Then, it was time to return to the spa for our appointments. Dr. Ankur put Robin in one treatment room and Dean in another. He started with Robin and set up her needles. Then he went to Dean's room and set up his needles. Then he went back and forth several times between the rooms to "twang" the needles. Robin noticed her sinuses were completely clear which was very unusual for her when laying face down. Before she told the doctor that, she said told him which needle really hurt. He said it was a pressure point for the sinuses. Pretty interesting. Dean couldn't feel any difference immediately, but said many of the needles hurt. Appointments were made for two more treatments each over the next 3 days.

We went back to the room and got dressed for dinner. We did go to the photography area to check out our photos from the previous night. None of the poses really caught us looking our best so we passed on buying them. Bummer!

Tonight at dinner, Jennifer and Heath did not show, but Bradford and Karen did. The food was again delicious and we learned more about our table-mates. Once dessert was ordered, the staff formed a Congo Line for us around the restaurant. Our server, Elmer, showed us a different side from his quiet and reserved persona we had seen. He was leading the Congo Line with all of the shakes and movements that went along with it. It was apparent that he really enjoyed dancing when he, along with others, climbed up on the serving pedestal and highlighted his dancing. We were blown away and, of course, didn't have our camera. We really gave Elmer a hard time when he got back to us that he had been holding out on us. He was not so reserved the rest of the week.

After dinner, we went back to 2 comedy shows. The first one was with Louis Johnson, Jr. again. He opened his show with putting out 2 poles and a ribbon strap at the corner of the stage where the gal had gotten up on the stage the previous night. All of us who had been there knew the story and had to explain to others around us. We really enjoyed his show again. The next comedian, Mike Speenberg, was okay, but not nearly as funny as Louis.
We went back to the room and met our new towel animal. We loved our dog. Our cabin stewardess, Evelyn, was doing a nice job being creative. It wasn't too long before we fell asleep, rocking to the gentle movement of the ship.
