Bush 41

Day 8 - May 13th

We began our day by driving through the Texas A & M University campus after a trip to Starbucks which just happened to be on the way! Wink! Wink!

Presidential Library #1 - George Bush in College Station, TX

Our destination was the George Bush Presidential Library. What a trip back in time!  When you visit a presidential library, it is never about politics, but rather about reliving history or learning about history if you weren't around during that time period.

Some of the highlights of the visit include:
  • Sitting in the Oval Office behind the desk
  • Learning about the family life at Camp David, especially seeing the dog bone dispenser for Millie
  • Seeing George and Barbara's wedding invitation where they had crossed out the date and handwritten in the actual date since George's return as a naval pilot in World War II kept being postponed
  • Seeing how the curators actively included children in the experience by creating mini-doghouses (painted to go along with the theme of each section) throughout the museum with stuffed Millies on the top and a question inside (on a dog bone shape) about that section

We learned a lot about his presidency but for both of us, we learned so much about George H. W. Bush as a child, a husband, a dad, and a grandfather...the last three titles he enjoyed most in life.

We loved some of the quotes we read about his childhood and the values that were instilled in him.

The traveling exhibit at the Bush Presidential Library was called "History in the Making: Texas A & M Forest Services". Some highlights of this section included:

  • Having picture taken with Smokey the Bear

  • Observing the samples of tree rings, acorns, and pinecones that showed the various types and sizes

  • Seeing photos and reading more about how the Texas A & M Forest Services took part in the search and recovery of STS-107 Columbia orbiter after the disaster

We left College Station and headed to Round Rock, TX right outside of Austin. We drove rain most of the way on our 107 mile journey.

We checked into Courtyard Marriott in Round Rock, TX and were pleasantly surprised with the modern accommodations. What a fabulous design, including charging stations (outlet and USB) everywhere in the room. This was the best yet! Once settled, we drifted off in comfort for the night.
